Self-assembly in soft matter with multiple length scales

Spontaneous self-assembly in molecular systems is a fundamental route to both biological and engineered soft matter. Simple micellisation, emulsion formation, polymer mixing principles are well understood. However, the behind emergence of structures with competing length scales matter remain an open question. Examples include droplet-inside-droplet assembly many biomacromolecular undergoing liquid-liquid phase separation, analogous multiple formation oil-surfactant-water formulations, core-shell particles internal structure. We develop here microscopic theoretical model based on effective interactions between constituents system explain self-organization at single scales. The identifies how spatial ordering emerges due components, e.g. molecules different sizes chemical properties. As example multiple-length-scale assembly, we map out generic diagram for solution two solute species differing their mutual solvent interactions. By performing simulations block-copolymer system, further demonstrate can be connected that has transition from regular single-core multi-core aggregates exhibit structural findings provide guidelines understanding rising spontaneously self-assembly, but also new venues development engineering biomolecular polymeric functional materials.
